Hello, I found this post while searching for help with JavaScript. I have recently switched browsers from Google Chrome to Firefox 3.2. Now I seem to have a problem with loading JavaScript. Every time I browse site that requires Javascript, my browser does not load and I get a "runtime error javascript.JSException: Unknown name". I can't seem to find out how to fix it. Any help is very appreciated! Thanks

This is by far the best tutorial on mirror effects that I have seen. Congrats on being thorough. The only problem I had was with the line tool, of all things. Each guide line created a new layer, but I simple merged them after the fact.

Thanks again and best.

Hi Jason,

Sounds like you opened a JPEG file or other existing image file with Photoshop. When you do this, Photoshop automatically turns the image you opened into a locked background layer.

There are two ways to deal with this. The first is to unlock the background layer and make it editable. The easiest way is to just double click on the locked layer. Now, type in a new name for the layer or just hit enter to except the default Layer 0. This will allow you to edit this layer.

If you would rather keep the original layer as a backup, then duplicate the background layer by hitting Ctr+J. Now you can edit your new duplicate layer, but you also have a backup of the original to fall back on. Just click on the eyeball next to the original back up to make it invisible as you work on your new editable layer.

When you create a new document using File > New... an empty layer is created by default. This is because even an empty document has to have an layer in it that describes the size (width and height) of the document.

By the way, the reason I didn't mention this in the tutorial is because I opened a new Photoshop file by using File > New... This will not create a locked background layer. It will create an empty editable layer. Then I pasted in the image I was working with.

Good luck, hope this helped.

When I create a new document, it creates a background layer. Why do you not even mention this? This is very confusing.

Hi Jenjer,

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but when you use a mask, the areas that are black in the mask will show the layers underneath, while the areas that are white will show the layer with the mask. Areas that are shades of gray (like you create with a gradient) will show some of the layer with the mask and some of the layers below.

I suggest that you click on your mask and paint on it in black and white with your brush. Watch what affect this has on the image as a whole. This is a good way to get an organic feel for how the mask works. Then apply the gradient.

i think the key is that, black on you mask will not show up as black in the image. Black on your mask will show the layers below the layer with the mask.

Hope this helps and good luck ;)
